2022 Permit Activity Slows From Prior Year
Metro Kansas City single-family housing permits were down about 25 percent in 2022, according to statistics compiled by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (KCHBA). The metro region finished the year with 4,885 single-family housing units permitted, down from 6,545 total units in 2021 — the lowest single-family total since 2019 when 4,654 homes were started.
Kansas City remains the top permitting city, with 791 single family permits issued in Clay, Platte, and Jackson counties. Olathe was the second most active city, with 498 permits and Overland Park was third busiest with 381 units permitted. Raymore and Lee’s Summit were the fourth and fifth busiest with 332 and 299 single family unit permits issued, respectively.
Overall, the top 10 cities issued 3,215 single family permits during 2022, compared with 4,492 issued by the 10 most active during 2021.
