August 2023 Residential Statistics Report

Housing Starts Tick Up in August

In August, the number of single-family permits issued rose to 403, which is the second highest month so far this year, according to statistics compiled by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (KCHBA). The month with the largest number of permits issued was May at 439. Year to date, 2,677 single-family permits have been issued, which is down 28 percent from this time last year.
“There is certainly a supply issue and with the market softening builders aren’t going to build more houses than the market can sell,” said Will Ruder, executive vice president of the KCHBA.

Kansas City, Mo., leads the list of top-permitting cities both for the month of August and year-to-date with 75 and 708 respectively. Rounding out the top five permitting cities for August are Olathe (49), Gardner (40), Blue Springs (38) and Lee’s Summit (32) single-family permits issued. Year to date, the top five permitting cities besides Kansas City, Mo., include Olathe (273), Overland Park (185), Shawnee (126) and Lee’s Summit (122).
