Single Family Permits Top 400 in October (October 2018)

KANSAS CITY, MO – Local cities and counties permitted 447 single family units in October, an increase of 110 from September.  The 2018 year-to-date total of 4,932 is higher than similar periods since the recession, with the exception of 2017, according to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City’s (HBA) monthly Residential Building Permit Statistics report.  Multi-family unit permits (five or more units in one building) have surpassed the same period last year, with 3,229 units permitted in 2018 compared to 1,903 in 2017.

Smithville was the most active city during October, permitting 46 single family units – 44 of which were for townhomes in the Clay Creek development.  Townhomes and villas continue to be popular throughout the metro area with permits issued in Basehor, Blue Springs, Lenexa, and Olathe for this type of home.

Kansas City remains the top permitting city, with 683 permits issued in Clay, Platte, and Jackson counties.  Olathe remains the second most active city, with 447 permits.  The Jackson county cities of Blue Springs and Lee’s Summit are the third and fourth busiest, with Overland Park rounding out the top five.    Overall, the top ten cities have issued 3,125 single family permits during 2018, compared with 3,394 issued by the ten most active during the first ten months of 2017.
