October Home Building Activity Maintains Steady Pace

October permit activity remained steady for the year, posting the seventh consecutive month of 200-plus single-family permits in the metropolitan region.  According to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City’s (HBA) monthly Residential Building Permit Statistics report, October had 205 single family units, bringing the annual total to 1,909.

Through ten months of 2011, permit activity is down 8.6 percent from 2010.  Compared to  2009, the lowest year on record for permit activity, 2011 is 7 percent higher than the same point two years ago.

“Builders continue to fulfill the American dream of homeownership as buyers in the market take advantage of historically low interest rates and housing affordability,” said HBA Executive Vice President Sara Corless.

Kansas City led the eight-county region monthly permit activity with 34 units, followed by Olathe with 29, Overland Park with 21, Platte County with 14, Lee’s Summit with 11, Greenwood and Lenexa with 9, Shawnee with 7, and Gardner, Raymore and Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan. with 6.
