Single-Family Home Building Remains on Strong Pace in 2026

July 2026 Residential Statistics Report

Single-family home construction across the Kansas City region continued to outpace last year’s activity in July, according to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City’s monthly residential building permit report. Builders pulled permits for 499 single-family homes in July, bringing the region’s year-to-date total to 3,356 single-family permits through seven months of 2026.

The year-to-date total represents a 30 percent increase over the 2,576 single-family permits issued during the same period in 2025 and has surpassed the permit totals recorded in 2023 and 2024 for this same time period.

July’s permit activity also exceeded the same month last year. The region recorded 499 single-family permits in July 2026, compared with 367 permits in July 2025, a gain of nearly 36 percent.

At the local level, Kansas City, Mo., led the region with 82 single-family permits issued during July across its reporting jurisdictions, followed by Olathe with 63 permits, Lenexa with 48 permits, Spring Hill with 44 permits and Kansas City, Kan./Wyandotte County with 25 permits.

Johnson County remained the region’s most active county, recording 225 single-family permits in July and 1,392 permits year-to-date, more than any other county in the metro area. The county accounted for approximately 41 percent of all single-family permits issued across the eight-county region through July.

The strong pace of permitting through the first seven months of the year reflects continued demand for new housing throughout the metropolitan area.
