Permits End Year Up, But Down As Well
The total number of single-family permits issued in 2024 in the eight county Kansas City area was 4,509. This is a 14 percent increase compared to 2023, when 3,947 single family permits were issued. This is a historically low number, however, when compared to the last eight years of permitting, according to statistics compiled by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (KCHBA). In fact, the only year with fewer permits issued was 2023.
This low number is in part due to a continued lag in permit issuance by Kansas City, Mo. Kansas City issued 39 permits in December and just 437 single family permits total for the year — 54 percent drop in permitting activity. Typically, the city issues approximately 900 per year.
