Housing Starts Down Slightly to Start 2025

For the month of January, 294 single-family housing permits were issued in the eight-county Kansas City region, which is slightly less than the 310 issued in January 2024, according to statistics compiled by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (KCHBA).

Housing starts nationwide were down in January. Constrained housing affordability conditions due to ongoing, elevated interest rates led to a reduction in single-family production to start the new year, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Four of the five the top permitting cities for January were located in Johnson County, Kan. While Kansas City, Mo., issued the most single-family permits in January with 40, Olathe issued 28, Spring Hill issued 23, Overland Park issued 22, and Lenexa issued 19.
