Single-Family Permits Continue Upward Trend, Except in KCMO
The number of single-family permits issued this year continued its upward trajectory in February as 328 permits were issued compared to 152 in February 2023. With 638 permits issued for the first two months of 2024, single-family housing permits have increased 89 percent compared to last year, according to statistics compiled by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (KCHBA). The only city where permits are not following this trend is Kansas City, Mo.
“Absent Kansas City, Mo., the KC metro area is up 117 percent year-to-date in total single-family permits compared to the same time last year,” said Will Ruder, executive vice president of the KCHBA. “Kansas City is down 22 percent from the same time last year.” If you look from a month-to-month comparison, the KC metro area is up 179 percent from February 2023 and Kansas City is down 74 percent from February 2023.
The top five permitting cities in February were Belton (46), Lee’s Summit (36), Lenexa (29), Overland Park (29) and Olathe (28).
