Fall Home Building Off to a Strong Start
In cities across the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, housing production continues to climb in 2013 with the total permit number coming in as the highest since 2007, according to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City’s (HBA) monthly Residential Building Permit Statistics report. September single family permits increased slightly to 383 over 379 single family permits the same month in 2012. Year to date total permits are the highest in six years with 3,092 single family permits compared to 2012 with 2,406.
“Clearly we are seeing increased building in expanding subdivisions which is good news for home buyers. In addition, we also are noticing a trend with infill and new home construction in established neighborhoods,” said Executive Vice President Sara Corless. “It is exciting to see new homes in all areas of the metropolitan area. In fact, one of the Grand Award winners in the Parade of Homes award contest was a new home built in Leawood. Numbers of infill lots also are surfacing in Fairway, Westwood, Prairie Village, Mission Hills and Kansas City.”
Permit growth is active throughout the eight county area with Jackson County up 44 percent over 2012, Johnson County is up 34 percent and Cass County is up 24 percent. Top cities ranked by single family units year to date are Kansas City with 523, Olathe with 395, Overland Park with 325 and Lee’s Summit with 265. Multi-family permits continue to increase with 217 units permitted in September bringing the 2013 total to 2,098 which is the highest since 2006.
