Luxury homebuyers today want more than extra square footage. They want homes designed around the way they live, work, entertain and relax. That’s exactly what visitors will discover during the 2026 Artisan Home Tour.

Presented by Ferguson Home and hosted by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City, the Artisan Home Tour showcases elevated design, superior craftsmanship and one-of-a-kind custom homes from some of the region’s most respected builders. This year’s tour features 20 luxury custom homes across the Kansas City metro.

Among the builders featured on the tour are Chris Ragland of Homes by Chris, Todd Hill of Todd Hill Homes and Jason Walker of Walker Custom Homes.

Their entry homes highlight the creativity, craftsmanship and attention to detail that distinguish artisan homebuilding from traditional new home construction.

Defining the Artisan Home Difference

While each builder has a different approach, they agree that artisan homes begin with intentional design.

Unlike production homes built from standardized plans, artisan homes are designed around the homeowner’s lifestyle, preferences and long-term needs. Every detail is carefully considered, from the floor plan to the finishes.

For Walker, an artisan home is defined by creativity and customization. “These homes aren’t cookie-cutter,” he explained. “They’re designed specifically for the homeowner and often include features you won’t see in a typical home.”

Hill points to innovation and forward-thinking design, while Ragland focuses on creating spaces that reflect how families live every day.

More Than a Home Tour

The tour has become a showcase for custom homes that push the boundaries of design and construction.

Unlike the Parade of Homes, which highlights a broad range of builders and price points, the Artisan Home Tour focuses on custom homes featuring innovative products, exceptional craftsmanship and unique design solutions.

The event also supports the Home Builders Charitable Foundation, helping more individuals and families experience the comfort and security of home.

Designed for Modern Living

One trend all three builders identified is the shift from building bigger homes to building smarter homes. “We’re seeing people right-size their homes,” Hill said. “They want spaces that work better rather than just making them bigger.”

Home offices remain in high demand, along with flexible living areas that accommodate guests, aging parents and multi-generational families.

Popular features in today’s luxury homes include:
• Dedicated home offices
• Multi-generational living suites
• Golf simulators
• Fitness rooms and wellness spaces
• Wine and bourbon rooms
• Outdoor kitchens and entertainment areas
• Resort-style pools and gathering spaces

Today’s buyers are focused on functionality, comfort and quality rather than square footage alone.

Featured Homes Showcase Custom Living

In Parkville, the Homes by Chris entry (Tour #4) includes a dedicated main-level office with built-in bookcases and an adjoining powder bath. The home also features a spacious dining area with a custom dry bar and an upper-level suite complete with a kitchenette, laundry area, living room and office space. The design reflects the growing demand for flexible living arrangements and multi-generational living.

In Overland Park, the Todd Hill Homes entry (Tour #17) showcases thoughtful space planning, custom details and innovative design solutions. The home reflects the growing preference for homes that are both beautiful and highly functional.

Walker’s entry home in Stilwell (Tour #14) highlights personalized design, premium materials, and spaces tailored to the homeowner’s lifestyle. In Lake Winnebago (Tour #18), visitors will experience another interpretation of luxury living featuring distinctive craftsmanship, entertainment areas and architectural details.

Although each home differs in style and amenities, all four demonstrate how today’s artisan builders are blending luxury, innovation and livability.

The Power of Collaboration

From architects and designers to cabinetmakers, metal craftsmen and specialty trades, artisan homes rely on skilled professionals working together to bring a vision to life.

Ragland highlighted the role of local artisans in creating custom features, while Hill praised Kansas City’s talented network of trade partners. Walker noted that successful projects depend on teamwork from concept through completion.

“The quality of the finished product depends on everyone involved,” Walker said.
