April Continues Upward Trend in New Home Construction

More than 400 single family units were permitted in April 2013 for the best month in the past five years. Statistics showed 441 permits in April 2008 and no months since have surpassed 400 until this month with 444, according to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City’s (HBA) monthly Residential Building Permit Statistics report. Year to date for 2013 shows 1,276 single family permits issued in the eight county area which is virtually the same as 2008 which had 1,277. Multi-family has shown the strongest year to date in recent history with 1,281 units permitted through April. Multi-family permits have not exceeded this number as of the month of April since 2001 which recorded 1,968.

Every county showed an increase over the permits for 2012 and the most significant increases are Johnson County which was up 57 percent and Wyandotte County was up 192 percent. In Missouri Cass County was up 23 percent, Clay County was up 5 percent, Jackson County was up 26 percent, and Platte County was up 17 percent. Other Kansas Counties also had increases with Leavenworth County up 43 percent and Miami County up 317 percent.
