Residential Permits Off to Steady Start in New Year

Single-family permit activity remained steady in the Kansas City metropolitan area in January, according to figures compiled by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (HBA). A total 534 single-family permits were issued last month, down 7 percent from the same time last year.

The slight decline in January is on the heels of strong activity at the end of 2001 ahead of numerous local regulatory changes. However, the permit numbers continue reflecting what areas of the metropolitan area are growing more quickly, said HBA executive vice president Tim Underwood.

"The most prosperous cities for new home growth in the metro are areas that offer a strong mix of new home choices," Underwood said. "Olathe continues to be the most popular area for new home activity, which is due in large part to the choices available there. This city has a wide variety of new homes that teachers, police officers and other working families can afford."

Olathe issued nearly double the number of single-family permits of the next closest city in January. Olathe issued 100 permits last month, followed by Kansas City, Mo., and Lee's Summit with 52 each.

Rounding out the top-permitting cities for the month are Raymore, 33; Leawood, 31; Shawnee 29, Independence, 27; unincorporated Jackson County 26; Lenexa, 24; and Blue Springs, 17.

The Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City (HBA) is the voice of the housing industry and the source for housing information. Comprising more than 1,000 member companies, the HBA represents an industry that contributes more than $2.5 billion to the Kansas City economy and supports more than 36,000 jobs in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area.
